The Afghan Hound Breed
The Afghan Hound belongs to the Hound group and is an excellent pet for an older family that has plenty of time for exercise. Having origins in the Middle East over 4000 years ago, this breed is loving and affectionate with a noble air.
The Afghan Hound might have problems with his health like any other breed of dog. Common concerns include a low pain tolerance causing even minor problems to be a big deal to this dog .
The Afghan Hound sheds an average amount of hair. The long silky hair of the Afghan does need attention or it will get matted. Weekly baths can help and brusing the hair when wet will keep it looking shiny. Pay special attention to the ears as they can dip into food and water bowls and become matted.
The Afghan Hound is a challenge to train depending on the dog. Some can be timid and may be difficult to housebreak. These dogs are very timid and must be trained with kindness. Afghan Hounds need to be exercised every day. Long walks are recommended and the breed will do best if allowed to run freely for at least 1/2 hour each day. A home with a big yard is best for this dog . This breed is best suited for a family with older children and needs attention from It's family.
The Afghan Hound has a long silky coat that comes in all colors by breed standard but typically earthy, sand type colors. Although they can have white markings, this is not desired. By breed standards, this breed is 27 to 29 inches and weighs 58 to 64 pounds. Tall and slim, this dog is regal in stature. He has a long narrow head with dark almond shaped eyes. The ears flop down and tail is curled at the end but carried down (not over the back). With adequate care, the Afghan Hound can live to be 14 years.
