The Airedale Terrier Dog Breed
The Airedale Terrier is a member of the Terrier group and is a popular dog for an active family. Having origins in England where it was developed from the working terrier over 100 years ago, this breed is intelligent and lively but can have a mind of his own and needs proper training.
The Airedale Terrier has a soft undercoat with a wiry outer coat that comes in tan with black markings. According to breed standards, this dog is 22 to 24 inches and the normal weight is 50 to 65 pounds for males and 40 to 45 for females. This breed is characterized by a long flat head and square stance. He has V shaped ears that fold slightly and a black nose. The tail is typically docked but if left alone should be carried high. With proper love and care, the Airedale Terrier live a long life - up to around 12 years.
The Airedale Terrier sheds a moderate amount which can be lessened if the coat is stripped. This breed does require quite a bit of grooming due to it's double coat and should be brushed daily. You also should take care to trim the hair between the pads on the feet and wash the beard as it can become stained from dipping into the food and water bowls..
The Airedale Terrier is a quick learner but needs to be trained with a firm hand. This dog shoul have variety in the training so he does not become bored. Don't be surprised, however if he stops listening to you long enough to chase a squirrel or chipmunk. With the Airedale Terrier, one must be firm in establishing who is the leader of the pack. This active breed needs a lot of exercise. Although this dog can try to dominate other dogs, he can get along well with children and cats - and even dogs if trained properly. They do play rough so watch them with young children .
The Airedale Terrier may have problems with his health like any purebred dog. Typical problems include hip displaysia, skin infections and eye problems.
